Return to Sender

My very first Ziggy Letter Elf has been returned to sender…address unknown…..no such number….no such zone. ( I hope you are singing along?)

Return to sender

This little elf has been all the way to New York and back all because I omitted a number one in the address. Silly Ziggy. So, I shall try again. The unopened envelope has gone into another envelope, because, well, now it’s got a story to tell. And in light of the post title here is Elvis Elf from last summers Celebrity Elves in July.

Elfvis

If you would like to get involved in my illustrated letter challenge take a look here. I’ll do my best to address your letter correctly.

Normal Service Will Be Resumed

It may be apparent to those who regularly pop by this blog that I like Elves. They are not to every ones liking given their mischievous tomfoolery which often leads to misfortune or death. But I love them and I love drawing them and post up inky doodled elves almost every day. Then I made the mistake of setting myself a challenge; Celebrity Elves in July. I declared that I would produce a celebrity inspired elf every day during that month. That’s 31 faces that had to resemble a famous person. It started well with Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis, Scarlett Johansson was a little dodgy and Lemmy left a lot to be desired, but Elvis rocked. Then came Orlando. Stupid, stupid Orlando! He Bloomin’ refused to elf up and I had to abandon him. My elf whispering abilities took a knock. What was happening to me? I decided to take a break from Blogging. Days elapsed so then I had to play catch up in order to meet the challenge; The Marx Brothers (4) The Proclaimers  (2). I was burning the fine liner at both ends but in a desperate bid to reach my goal I elfed up….The Magnificent Seven (7). It was painful to behold. They didn’t even look like The Magnificent Seven. But I didn’t care because that was 18 elves down 13 to go. But my heart wasn’t in it and I popped my fineliners back in a drawer and closed the lid of my laptop. The art of elfing had deserted me! In one last ditched effort to regain my powers I produced Bradley Wiggins Elf, and slumped back, exhausted and confused.

Then it dawned on me. Celebrities aren’t real! Of course they are human like in appearance but quite clearly they are the imaginings of fevered human brains. Only a made up creature could have such perfect skin, pearly white teeth, and well toned body. No wonder I couldn’t draw them, not only do they all look the same they don’t exist!

My dear follower, please excuse my folly. I have seen the error of my ways and will draw nothing but real life elves. I will continue to hone my Elf Whispering skills to coax these elusive creatures out from the bottom of my garden and sketch, doodle and draw their likeness.  In fact here’s a little chap now and he’s got something to say….

Celebrity Elves in July; Bradley Wiggins

As far as my challenge to post up a celebrity elf each day in July is concerned….I’ve failed! But this elf is a true winner. The first British cyclist to win the Tour de France, Mr Bradley Wiggins. He may not have been a celebrity at the start of July but he sure is now.

Celebrity Elves in July; The Magnificent Seven

Well, I am way behind in this challenge. 7 days in fact. So whadda you get? The Magnificent Seven…Elfed! Yes I know some of these are a little dubious and Tall Man has been very critical. Yul Brynner makes for a gorgeous elf and it was a pleasure to scrutinise the many images of him on the internet. The others, although very handsome men, were pants to elf up! Poor old Brad Dexter hardly gets a look in, but then he’s always the one you forget when asked to name the Magnificent Seven. Now that I know them so intimately I pray that question comes up in a pub quiz. Can you name them all without turning to Google?

My favourite character though is the manic Calvera played by Eli Wallach.  Whether he would make a good elf is debatable, but what are the Magnificent Seven without him?

Celebrity Elves in July; The Proclaimers

Celebrity Elves in July numbers 10 and 11 are twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid. Together they are The Proclaimers. I absolutely love their music and can’t understand why they aren’t more famous. Although having said that I’ve yet to have luck getting tickets to their gigs when they’ve hit Newcastle.

I believe I have drawn Charlie on the left and Craig on the right. And I’ve caught a better likeness of Craig. Or maybe I’ve drawn Frankie Boyle twice. You decide.

I would like to thank Craig at The Artshed for this suggestion. He creates amazing art…….from a shed. I think shed- working  sounds so romantic but perhaps he would beg to differ. Anyway pop over and say hello.

Celebrity Elves in July; Elvis Presley

What can I say? It’s the King of Elves. I didn’t appreciate just what a beautiful young man Elvis was until I came to scrutinise the many images that appear on the internet. As he gazes out under dark lashes with an ever so slight sneer from full lips he manages to combine boyish charm and sexual competence. No wonder mothers wanted to protect their innocent young daughters from him.

I would like to thank Hansi, my most favourite American male, for the suggestion to elf up The King of Rock n’ Roll. Hansi is a ranting mad man…… who draws. Pop over and say hello at Hansi’s Hallucinations. You’ll have lots of fun.

There are a lot of Celebrity Elves yet to get through. Suggestions are welcome so please leave a comment. If I elf up your celebrity choice I’ll link back to your blog.

Celebrity Elves in July; Lemmy

Here is Celebrity Elf number 8; Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. Until today I knew very little about Lemmy, but after a butchers at Wikipedia I know reliably little more. He’s actually christened Ian, which isn’t as Rock n’ Roll as Lemmy, he’s “bedded” in excess of 1,000 women and drinks a bottle of Jack Daniel’s every day! He can now add to his achievements “I was elfed by Ziggy Shortcrust.”

Thank you so much to Rosie for the suggestion to elf up Lemmy. If you haven’t visited her at Scribblah yet then do so.  She is an incredible artist who posts up wonderful images from sketches to etchings. (amusingly, parental guidance warnings accompanying some of them). Pop over and say I sent you.

Celebrity Elves in July; The Marx Brothers

I’ve set myself what is turning out to be a ridiculous challenge of a Celebrity Elf for each day in July. That’s 31 faces. 31 faces that have to resemble a famous person. What was I thinking!!!!! So I’ve spent the last two days in a drunken stupor contemplating the error of my ways. Of course that’s two days without an elfed celebrity in sight. So in order to catch up I present to you the elfter egos of The Marx Brothers. As there are four of them that gives me an elf in hand, so to speak. Ah yes, there is a method in my madness.

Harpo, Groucho, Zeppo, Chico

Actually there were five brothers, the fifth being Gummo. However, he only appeared in the stage shows and not the movies. Zeppo was in the first five films, and having looked closely at many images of him I swear he is part elf.

Thank you so much for the suggestions for celebrity elves. I’m working on them; Orlando Bloom is proving to be a challenge, Elf-vis, coming on well and I can’t wait to elf up Frankie Boyle. Any other ideas are gratefully received. Leave a comment and if I use your elf I will link back to your blog.

Enjoy your weekend. I’m returning to a darkened room and a bottle of Mother’s Ruin.

Celebrity Elves in July; Scarlett Johansson

Celebrity Elf number 3 and I thought it should be the turn of the ladies. Scarlett Johanson came to mind although I have no idea why. She has proved to be difficult to elf up but once I start something I don’t give in. Tall Man says she looks more like Kylie Minogue, but then have you ever seen Scarlett and Kylie in the same room? Well, have you?

There’s a heck of a lot more of these to go before the end of July. If anybody has got any requests for a favourite celebrity to be elfed leave a comment. If I use your suggestion I’ll link back to your blog, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll get a copy of your July Elf Pin-up.
